The Intergalactic Superhero Multimedia Musical

Part of the Summerworks Theatre Festival
August 7‐17

June 23, 2007. Toronto, Ontario… The Cheshire Unicorn Theatre Company is thrilled to present the exciting new musical Kid Cosmic, written by playwright Daniel Cummings and composer Dan Mock, directed by Melissa Major and Music Directed by Jordann Zaza, which will be presented at the SummerWorks Theatre Festival in August.

The show begins when Casey and Amber, a teenage couple, are caught in a deadly fire. Casey survives, Amber does not. Casey falls into a coma where he dreams that he is Kid Cosmic,an intergalactic superhero directed by the Cosmic Consortium, a group of space deities. In the space fantasy he gets to save the girl. We follow Casey from total denial to a place where the bravest, most heroic thing he can do is to wake up and face what truly happened.

Director Melissa Major is the co-creator with Reza Jacobs of this summer’s Fringe hit Floozy: The Musical, and is also the mastermind behind Even Burning (Toronto Fringe ‘08 / Razz Interactions), Unicorn Horns (directed by Aleksandar Lukac in the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace) and Art is a Cupboard (directed by Geoffrey Pounsett, Fringe ‘06). Music Director Jordann Zaza has worked as Music Director for many musicals including Footloose (Paradox Productions and Randolph Young Company), West Side Story (Fallen Rock), La Cage Aux Folles (Scarborough Music Theatre) and Jesus Christ Superstar (Stage Blue Productions).

This production features Justin Bott (MacBeth for Classical Theatre Projects and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change! for Canadiana Productions), Amy Connolly (Grease at the Bluma Appel Theatre, Chicago at the Stephenville Theatre Festival and Rex at Theatre New Brunswick), James Quigley (Anne of Green Gables and The Wizard of Oz for the Grand Theatre), Emily Wall (Anton in Show Business, directed by Rosanna Saracino) and Jess Abramovitch (Grease at the Bluma Appel Theatre).

This innovative production of Kid Cosmic is due to an exceptional production team. The work of graphic artist Jeff Blackburn will be integrated into the production by simultaneously telling the story through comic book drawings which are projected onto a screen that is part of the ship on which the cosmic consortium lives. Set and costume design is created by Scott Penner (Lucky Stiff and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory at TYT and design assistant on Houdini at Segal Theatre, Montreal), audio/visual design by Emily C. Porter (Kids in the Hall Tour ’07, Jewtopia at Diesel Playhouse) and Stage Management provided by Gillian Lewis (company stage manager for Toronto Dance Theatre).

Daniel Cummings' book and lyrics combine a lifetime of pop-culture obsessions with a tragic and poetic emotional realism. Dan Mock's score, rooted in modern rock, ranges from intimate romantic moments to intergalactic cosmic wars.
