KICKING AND SMILING

Something terribly wrong must have happened to Tish and Manno, a couple of young, vibrant visual artists for us to find them in their warehouse torturing a woman tied up in a chair. What could lead them to become torturers? Who is the woman they have tied up in a chair and what on earth has she done to deserve this? Right before the knife is about to pierce the woman for the fatal incision, they have a change of heart. The gag is taken out and everyone’s secrets are spilled.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is right around the corner and the night promises a city full of exciting art events. The 401 Richmond arts building will be the host of one of the few theatre experiences scheduled for the evening. Produced by the internationally acclaimed theatre company The Cheshire Unicorn, will be KICKING AND SMILING, a play written and directed by Melissa Major. 3 performances will take place in the basement of the building over the course of the night at 10pm, midnight and 2am.

After The Cheshire Unicorn’s production of Unicorn Horns for Nuit Blanche 2006, the troupe took the play to Hong Kong to have an incredibly successful production in the 2007 IDEA World Congress of Theatre and it will be remounted once again November 8-18, 2007 in the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace.

Now the company is back to give Nuit Blanche another taste of its work. Featuring a talented cast and a compelling script that won the 2007 York University President`s Prize for Playwriting, this is one Nuit Blanche event that is not to be missed.
