Even Burning

Written by Melissa Major
Directed by Yevgeniya Falkovich
Starring: Renée Hackett & Miranda Calderon

Toronto, Ontario…Razz Interactions is thrilled to announce the re-mounting of Even Burning at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace (16 Ryerson Avenue) as part of the 2008 Toronto Fringe Festival; running July 3 to July 13, 2008.

How strong of a grip can a memory have? Can it hold you as its prisoner?

Nina, now in her thirties, is haunted by the memory of her childhood friend, Remmie-a strange young creature who held a mysterious power over young Nina. Years later, somehow that power still prevails.

Physical theatre brings Major’s poetic text alive, exploring the haunting connection between a woman and a ghost through movement and the power of words.

The cast of this exciting two-hander features RENÉE HACKETT as Nina (The Devil You Don’t Know (also coproducer) with Redwatch Theatre, directed by Heather Braaten, Power of the Unemployed for RCA Theatre, directed by David Ferry, the critically acclaimed Those Who Wait (also co-producer) with Redwatch Theatre, directed by Heather Braaten, and Waiting For Lefty for The Co., directed by Dean Gabourie) and MIRANDA CALDERON as Remmie (Assistant Director for Theatre Smith-Gilmour’s The Mansfield Project at Factory Studio Theatre, BANG! at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Hamlet with the New Shakespeare Company and the title role in an award-winning and critically-acclaimed production of Oscar Wilde’s Salome at Aurora Theatre in Berkeley, California).

Directed by Yevgenia Falkovich (Winter by Evgeni Grishkovetz with Theatre F (also co-producer) and Job Descriptions by Peter Bloch-Hansen for the 2007 New Ideas Theatre Festival at The Alumnae Theatre), Even Burning is written by award-winning playwright Melissa Major (writer/performer of Unicorn Horns at Theatre Passe Muraille, the 2007 IDEA World Congress of Theatre in Hong Kong and Nuit Blanche 2006, playwright of Art is a Cupboard at Toronto Fringe, directed by Geoffrey Pounsett, and hotINK Festival in New York City and founder of The Cheshire Unicorn), who also has another Fringe production this summer called Floozy: The Musical, co-created with Reza Jacobs. This production of Even Burning reunites Renée Hackett and Miranda Calderon who were last seen together in its world premiere at Alumnae Theatre’s New Ideas Festival in 2008. Elephantband Theatre called this production “…very atmospheric, scary, spine-tingling and strongly acted…”.
